Papaver for National Museum, Wales
Creatively Crafted
I completed my placement at National Museum Cardiff and whilst there I worked on this unique project and couldn't have been happier to do so.
Working on it enabled me to use my knowledge and skills in realistic illustration techniques to bring a piece to life which I’m extremely proud of. If you’re interested in learning more about this project or any of my other creations, feel free to contact me. Scroll down to see more of this work.

The brief was to illustrate the four main types of Papaver (poppy) found in Britain, focusing on diagnostic features and scientific accuracy. The aim is to be able to identify a poppy species by illustrating the key differences, with the outcome being shown in the centenary commemorative WWII exhibition opening July 2018.
The top image is the outcome depicting Papaver Dubium Recognisable as having smaller, petals and oblong seed capsules. The left image is Papaver Rhoeas- the common poppy, recognisable by its oblong leaves and solitary bright scarlet bowl-shaped flowers.
See below for the other 2/4 outcomes.

Prickly Poppy- Recognisable by its adpressed hairs up the stem, and smaller separated, deeper-red flowers than observed in P. Rhoeas. Also has a dark blotch at the base of each petal.

I was later asked to colour the separate flower for the common poppy- the one most easily recognised. I used the same method and digitally coloured my graphite drawing. I actually love the result, after learning not to be too precious with the original graphite version, I realised that the bold colour really pops and the detail is still visible.

Long headed poppy- Recognisable as having smaller, pinker petals than P.Rhoeas and oblong seed capsules.
