Literature Illustration - The Twits

Below you’ll find a glimpse of a literature project I’ve worked on  whilst studying my Illustration degree. Although based on a fictional story and with more of an artistic license than my scientific illustrations, this project draws on my love for realism, detail and animal illustration. If you would like to know more about this project or my artistic journey, please get in touch.

Roly Poly Bird Brings Key.jpg

 Roly-poly bird

Created in response to Roald Dahl's The Twits as part of my Literature module. This piece was inspired by my love for realism and detail. It incorporates my interest in scientific illustration with my technical drawing skills, using various sources of bird references to create a fictional bird. I opted for a monochrome style using pen and ink in a stippling fashion as I wanted to create visually dynamic pieces.

This scene depicts when the birds fly from all over the world to visit and communicate with the Muggle-wumps in their cage at the bottom of the garden. Various sources of bird references were used to illustrate a variety of both British and exotic birds.

Human Narrative Outcomes

As part of this project, I was required to illustrate the human protagonists Mr. and Mrs. Twit as well as the more scientific illustration inspired ones with pure animal subject matter shown above. This began with my character design, which was extended to show interactions with animals as per the narrative.

Character Design- Mr. and Mrs. Twit

I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone to extend this monochrome pen and ink technique to the more narrative elements of the Literature module- character design. I really wanted to create strong visuals of these iconic characters, incorporating elements form the story to convey their horrid personalities and appearances.

Frog Trick.jpg

The Toad Trick

This piece illustrates the scene where Mr. Twit tricks his wife by placing a toad in her covers whilst she gets into bed to experience the slimy toad on her feet. I again drew upon my interest in scientific illustration to draw the toad.

Mrs Twit Making Bird Pie.jpg

Mrs Twit Makes Bird Pie

This piece illustrates the scene where Mrs. Twit captures birds from her garden via sticky glue traps to bake them into bird pie . She reaches into the oven with her pie and oven gloves, with the remains of the captured birds poking out from the pastry.
